Dentures help millions of people live more normal lives, but just like natural teeth, they require regular care. Dentures can wear down, stain, and lose their shape. Over time they may become less comfortable as the size and shape of your mouth changes. See your dentist if:

  • Your current dentures are uncomfortable
  • You find yourself using more and more denture adhesives
  • You've been wearing the same dentures for more than 5 years. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that dentures be replaced every 5 to 7 years.

Getting Your New Smile

Aspen Dental wants your transition to dentures to be easy and comfortable, so all our offices are equipped with on-site denture labs. That means our dentists and technicians can work together to give you a comfortable fit and faster service. In fact, many denture repairs and adjustments can be done while you wait.

How long does the new denture process take?

It doesn’t take long to get a brand new smile. Once the dentist has examined you and determined you are a candidate for dentures, the denture-fitting process can begin right away. The time between being fitted with your immediate dentures and being fitted with your permanent dentures can vary, depending on your situation.

Taking Care of Dentures

Pastes, powders, brushes? Caring for your dentures can seem confusing, but it's quite easy. We recommend cleaning your dentures after every meal with a denture brush and denture cleanser or soap. Avoid gritty pastes or powders. Your dentist will be happy to explain the best way to care for your dentures.

Dentures aren't permanent. You should see your dentist at least once a year for a complete exam to ensure your dentures still fit properly and are in good shape.

Dentures Myths and Facts

For most patients, today’s dentures are comfortable, natural-looking, and can vastly improve your life. Here are some common misconceptions and the real facts.

Denture Myth: Once I receive my new dentures, I’m set for life.

Denture Fact: According to the American Dental Association, dentures should be replaced every 5-7 years. Natural teeth wear down and stain over the years; your dentures will too. The tissue in your mouth and jaw bone changes constantly. As a result, your dentures will require adjusting and rebasing periodically so that they continue to fit comfortably and securely.

Denture Myth: Once I receive my new dentures, I don't have to go to the dentist anymore.

Denture Fact: You will need to see your dentist at least once a year so that any corrective measures with the fit of your dentures may be taken and serious problems avoided. And be sure to see your dentist at the first sign of irritation or frequent sore spots on your gums, no matter how minor you may feel it to be.

Denture Myth: I will never be able to eat foods like apples and corn on the cob with dentures.

Denture Fact: Although eating with dentures takes adjustment, don't be discouraged. You will learn to bite and chew in a slightly different way. You will likely be able to enjoy eating apples, corn and many other foods you have been avoiding when you have mastered the art. Your dentist will be happy to help you work through any problems you encounter.

Denture Myth: It will take a lifetime to adjust to my new dentures.

Denture Fact: Dentures are a substitute for your natural teeth and will therefore take some getting used to. Some people will feel comfortable with their dentures in a week, some will take longer. But your facial muscles and oral tissues will adapt to the dentures in a very short time and you should soon feel quite comfortable with them. If not, be sure to contact your dentist. You may need a simple adjustment.

At Aspen Dental, we believe that no two mouths are alike, so no two dentures will be identical. Each set of dentures we create is custom-made and handcrafted for you and you alone.

Our dentists and denture technicians work with you to produce dentures to suit your unique needs and create just the "right" look that fits our patients' appearance, the way they speak and the way they eat and chew.

The first step in creating your dentures is to complete an accurate impression of the upper and lower portions of your mouth. The impression is turned into a base that will help us create a complete model of your new smile called a "Try-In Denture."

Your Aspen Dental dentist will have a variety of different teeth to choose from, with a wide range of color, shades and shapes, and translucency. These are inserted in the wax Try-In Denture as your dentist presents you with different options for your new smile. At this stage, you can preview and make changes to truly customize your new dentures.

Then we use two different but equally precise methods to create our dentures.
Cold-pour is the traditional way dentures have been fabricated for years. And it uses a method and materials that have been proven for their reliability and durability.

Heat-injected is a more advanced technology in which the denture material is injected into a custom mold with over 110 psi of pressure and then heat-cured. The resulting denture is stronger, denser and more closely matches the impressions of your mouth, so it can provide a more precise and comfortable fit.

When your dentures are ready, the final steps are the most crucial. Every Aspen Dental office features an on-site Denture Lab where the dentist and denture technician can make final adjustments that are vital to making your dentures fit well and work well. They are also readily available to make on-going adjustments if necessary, to ensure that your dentures are as comfortable as possible.

During the warranty term of your denture, we’ll do whatever it takes to make sure your dentures are the right fit. So we’ll repair, free of charge, any break, crack or fracture, or replace, free of charge, any tooth loss that is a result of a flaw in workmanship. Surprise bills? Not here – we promise that the price we quote you for your dentures is the price you pay. And if your insurance pays less than we estimate, we’ll cover the difference.

However, we will not reconstruct, repair, reline or replace the denture, free of charge, due to any of the following: loss, discoloration, excessive wear (for example, excessive grinding of teeth), inappropriate use (for example, any use not prescribed by the dentist), neglect or abuse. Defects or damages resulting from any service adjustments or alterations of your denture by someone other than an authorized Aspen Dental representative are excluded from coverage under our warranty agreement and will render it null and void.
