As part of our Meet Your Dentist series, we would like to introduce you to Dr. Joe Tesene, owner of the Aspen Dental office in Des Moines, Iowa. Born and raised in Iowa, Dr. Joe Tesene attended The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and began his career serving patients in Des Moines in 2009.
What was your inspiration for becoming a dentist and joining Aspen Dental?
Dr. Joe Tesene:
I have always been a science geek and also always interested in creative activities, so dentistry is a natural career fit. My father is also a dentist and from a young age I observed his joy for the profession. Now I take my position very seriously, and enjoy the opportunities practice ownership has given me. I began working with Aspen Dental as managing clinical director, on recommendation from my dental school classmate and friend. Working in this setting was very natural after working a year in private practice. I enjoy leading my team and delivering great dentistry, and I am happy to have a business partner to support the administrative operations.
What’s your area of expertise? Do you have a favorite procedure?
Dr. Joe Tesene:
General dentistry suits me because it offers a wide variety of procedures and treatment planning opportunities. Although I don’t consider myself an “expert” in any specialty area, I feel oral surgery, endodontics, and prosthodontics are my strengths and where I focus my continuing education. My favorite procedure is the one I’m performing now.
How are you involved in the community outside of the office?
Dr. Joe Tesene:
As a native of Iowa, I enjoy the relaxed lifestyle here and the ability to spend time with my family. My wife and I have two children under 3, so our hands are full there. The Iowa Mission of Mercy, organized by the Iowa Dental Association, is an event in which I’m proud to participate. The annual event lasts three days and serves thousands of underserved patients with free dental care.
What’s your favorite toothpaste flavor?
Dr. Joe Tesene:
Mint of course. My 3-year-old daughter calls it “Daddy toofpaste” and apparently has taken a liking to it too.
