School has started, vacation is over –between work, school, meetings, play dates, soccer practice and dance class, you’re constantly on the go.

Let’s face it — brushing your teeth throughout the day, after every meal, snack or coffee is not always realistic, but make sure you brush your teeth twice a day – the best times being after breakfast (but be careful if you just had some orange juice!) and just before bed.

I recommend waiting at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking to brush your teeth. Those 30 minutes give your mouth time to produce saliva, which will neutralize the acidity in the mouth. Saliva will also help your teeth to harden and absorb more calcium.

After eating sticky foods, such as lollipops, caramels or dried fruit, you should brush your teeth immediately or as soon as possible. These foods may stick to the crevices of your teeth, so it is important to brush them away. The longer these sugars sit there, the greater chance that bacteria can form on the food particles, potentially leading to cavities.

Can’t brush? Here’s some things you can do in the meantime to clean your teeth and mouth:

  • Drink water throughout the day to flush away plaque and bacteria: Head to the bathroom for a quick swish and rinse if needed!
  • Chew gum or suck on a mint to freshen up your breath: Gum and mints also encourage saliva production, which will help neutralize acids in the mouth and strengthen teeth. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago found that cinnamon-flavored gum helps reduce bacteria in the mouth due to a plant essential oil used for flavoring – the oil inhibits the growth of cavity causing bacteria in the mouth!
  • Munch on an apple: Apples act as nature’s tooth brush to clean teeth. Other fruits and vegetables will help encourage saliva production to clean out the mouth.
  • Avoid smoking and foods and drinks (such as coffee) that will stain your teeth.
  • Drink a cup of tea: The ingredients in tea prevent harmful bacteria from sticking to teeth and block the production of sugars that may contribute to cavities.
  • Floss your teeth: Stick a pack of floss in your locker or bag and sneak off to the bathroom after lunch to remove food particles stuck between your teeth.
